A super simple burger sauce recipe using only 3 ingredients. Use it for burgers, hot dogs or for dipping those homemade fries into! This is one of those little fridge-door recipes I come back to again and again. No faffing, no chopping, no cooking, just a proper tasty burger sauce that pulls together a burger night in minutes.

Nicky’s Notes

A woman with long brown hair and a black top smiles at the camera, sitting indoors with a brick wall and some greenery in the background.

This burger sauce recipe is my go-to when we’re having burgers at home and I want that creamy, tangy, slightly sweet sauce that makes everything taste properly takeaway-worthy.

It’s ridiculously simple, the sort of sauce you can stir together while the burgers are sizzling, but it makes such a difference. I always make a little extra for dipping chips into because, honestly, that’s half the fun.

These easiest recipe with the fewest ingredients, but it’s so bloomin tasty!
This is my favourite burger sauce! I like it on the burger, along with a big dollop on the side to dip the burger into too!!

📋 Ingredients for Burger Sauce

***Full recipe with detailed quantities in the recipe card below***

Bottles of ketchup, mayo and mustard on a wooden surface.

Yep – just these 3 bottles is all you need!
Mix them up – 6 parts ketchup, 6 parts mayo, 1 part mustard and you’re done.

Ingredient Swaps and Substitutions

  • For a lighter version, you can use light mayonnaise. It won’t be quite as rich, but it still gives you a lovely creamy burger sauce.
  • For more tang, stir in a little finely diced gherkin or pickle. A few readers have mentioned doing this, and it gives the sauce a lovely burger-relish feel.
  • For a smoky version, try using a smoky ketchup or adding a tiny pinch of smoked paprika. It’s especially good with BBQ burgers.
  • For a bit of heat, add a little hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne. Start small — you can always add more, but you can’t un-spice it once it’s in there.
  • If you can’t find mild yellow mustard in your supermarket, use a mild American-style mustard. I’d avoid using too much strong English mustard as it’s much punchier.

Make it at least 10 minutes before serving if you can. Even though it’s ready straight away, a short rest gives the flavours time to mingle and mellow into that proper burger-sauce flavour.

I usually stir it together before I start cooking the burgers, then it’s perfect by the time everything is ready to assemble.

So simple and so much better than buying a large jar for half of it to get wasted, as usually happens. Thank you.
