This recipe is an essential addition to any chippy feast. A super quick and easy recipe that leaves you with a velvety and tangy sauce!

It takes less than 5 minutes to whip up and is just SO good.

📋 Ingredients

A wide overhead shot of the ingredients for tartare sauce are laid out on a wooden board. They are as follows: mayonnaise, mini gherkins, capers in brine, a lemon, and ground white pepper.

Mayo – You can of course swap out the full-fat mayonnaise for your favourite lower-fat mayo.

Mini Gherkins – You can use any type of gherkin/cornichans/burger-pickles you like. We opted for mini gherkins because I always have them on hand.

How do you make tartare sauce?

This recipe is SUPER simple, all you need to do is mix the ingredients together and that’s it!

A wide overhead shot of the prep for tartare sauce. There is a white bowl which has some finely chopped pickled gherkins and capers. To the left of the bowl, there is a large silver knife with a black handle. To the top middle and left of the bowl, there is the open jars of pickled gherkins and capers. This is all on a wooden board.

To the right of the bowl, there are closed jars of pickled gherkins and capers and a whole lemon. This is on a wooden board.

Pro Tip

You can use the amount of lemon juice to control the consistency and tartness of the tartare sauce. Add mode to create a thinner, more tangy version, or less for a thicker, creamier tartare sauce.

This is one of my favourite side dishes to fish and chips!

The sharp twist of this sauce pairs perfectly with some tender, crispy fish and the salty, golden chips.

Never thought about making my own tartar sauce before. I will not be buying ready made again, it’s so easy and so much tastier to make your own. Thanks for the inspiration.
